Hive

The Hive functions as an inner sanctum, it provides a serene area surrounding the lily pond/water detention at the center of the organ site, in turn surrounded by an agora, organic gardens and orchard which are bordered by two performance stages/theaters and a mini museum and gallery district, multiuse and food court area, which in turn are nested within the inner wall/bazaar formation, similar to a cloister, and accessible on the inward side along the pedestrian path. Bicycles dedicated to the area within the Organ site will be freely available. The performance stage will be made available to resident non-profits, individuals, touring artists, concerts etc, and will be open to the public when performances are scheduled.

The Hive is reserved for any positive intellectual or spiritual activity which can be done quietly, including but not limited to visual and performing artists/writers studios, non-profit office/activity spaces, meditation chapels, and tourist over-night stays. Periodic tours of studios may be given for those artists electing to do so and artists will be encouraged to exhibit their work on the organ site. The Hive program of providing a contemplative study and a quiet creative work environment could, in part, be supported by the micro economy of the surrounding bazaar and capital generated from the performance stage revenues to augment income from box rentals.

The Hive is built as a 72 ft high hemisphere from 148 core–ten steel shipping containers, each 20′ long, 8′high x 8″ wide integrally arrayed within a compression ring reinforced ramp 198 ft wide, serving as a structural element and access way exceeding handicap codes. It has the benefit of doubling as a labyrinth approach before settling down to work within ones box. A Waterfall, free flowing from a ring near the Oculus, will fall into the lily pond/ central circular pool below, and recirculate through the Hive via solar pumps, thereby cooling the area while simultaneously providing a calming aural effect. The Hive’s roof is an open air Oculus letting in sunlight, much like the Pantheon. Where practical he entire Organ site will be covered in solar panels.

The Hive will be constructed in phases at the same time as the Bazaar, with two levels/coils of the Hive constructed per leg of the Bazaar. A box or cluster of boxes containing a micro museum documenting the inception, development, process and continued evolution of Organ will also hold an office, meeting room and check in point. The phases could termed a “sustained morphology”, a fancy way of saying each phase will consist of setting down a dozen boxes which are activated before more boxes are added and the utility platforms will be economically small and upgraded over time as demand increases with development and programming.
